In Douala, renting a car almost always means renting a car with a driver. That is not an upgrade, it is how the market works. Here is what it costs, what is included, and the few lines of the agreement that decide whether the trip goes well.
Why a driver is the norm, not an option
Most Cameroonian agencies will not hand a vehicle to someone they do not know. When they do, they want heavy security: often a land title, sometimes a passport, almost always a cash deposit. For a visitor, and especially for diaspora home for a few weeks, that door is closed in practice.
A driver also solves three things nobody warns you about: Douala traffic, parking, and the fact that a great deal of local addressing works by landmark rather than street name. Someone who knows Akwa, Bonapriso and Bonamoussadi saves you more time than they cost.
Douala prices, by category
Rates are counted in 12-hour days, not 24-hour days. That is the local convention and it is the first thing that surprises visitors from Europe.
- Sedan with driver: from around 35,000 XAF for a 12-hour day. Fits 4 people and 2 large cases.
- SUV with driver: around 70,000 XAF a day. More boot space and better ground clearance, which matters in the rainy season.
- 7-seat van: meaningfully more, depending on the agency and the season. Ask case by case.
These are observed ranges, not an official tariff. They move with the season, the length of the hire and the agency. A weekly or monthly hire is almost never priced as a multiple of the daily rate, so ask for the block price.
What is not included, and what catches people out
- Fuel is nearly always on you. Budget around 840 XAF a litre at the pump. Over a week of city driving that is not a rounding error.
- Leaving Douala changes the price. A run to Kribi, Yaounde or Bafoussam is negotiated separately, often around 50,000 XAF a day, on top of the base rate.
- If the driver sleeps away, you pay his meals and lodging: on the order of 10,000 XAF a night. This applies only if he stays over, never for a same-day return.
Questions to ask before booking
- Is a day 12 or 24 hours, and from what time?
- What happens if I run over, and what is the hourly rate?
- Is mileage unlimited within Douala?
- Is there a deposit, and am I asked to leave a document?
- Is the vehicle in the photo the one I will get?
- What happens if it breaks down during my hire?
The last one is the most useful. A serious agency answers immediately, because it has a second vehicle. An agency that hesitates has told you everything you need to know.
The vehicle photo
Many Cameroonian listings show generic images found online rather than the actual vehicle. Ask for a dated photo taken by the agency, exterior and interior. If the answer is that it will be “a similar model”, at least get the category, the number of seats and the luggage capacity, and get it in writing.
If you are arriving by air
The first trip is the one that gets negotiated worst, because it gets negotiated while you are tired, at the arrivals exit. Settle it before you fly: see our guide to the Douala airport transfer, with price ranges and the questions to ask.
And if the accommodation is not settled, start there: verified furnished stays in Douala decide the neighbourhood, and the neighbourhood decides your journeys.
