Building KasaStay from where I am today, for the people at home and the people far from it.
LinkedInHi, I'm Emmanuel.
If you're Cameroonian and you've spent any time living abroad, you already know the WhatsApp message I'm about to describe. It always starts with "please" and ends with the name of a city back home. Someone in your family needs a place to stay in Douala for a week. Or your cousin's friend is visiting Yaoundé and needs somewhere safe. So you do what we all do. You ask around. You call someone. Someone sends a photo. You wire the money. And then you wait to see if any of it was real.
I lost count of how many times this went wrong for people I care about. I went through it myself when I visited home, and I have friends who paid deposits for apartments that turned out to be already rented to someone else. One friend transferred a deposit to a "host" who deleted his WhatsApp account the same day. None of these stories are unusual. If you're reading this, you probably have your own version of them.
The part nobody talks about is how much it hurts the other side too. There are diaspora Cameroonians who saved for ten years to buy a small apartment in Douala, trusted a family member to manage it, and only found out months later that it had been rented under the table the whole time. Or worse, that it was sitting empty because nobody knew how to fill it. There was no system anywhere. No way to verify a host. No way to track a booking. No way to know what your own property was earning.
I built KasaStay because I'd had enough of watching this happen.
I'm not coming at this from nowhere. I left Cameroon in October 2014 and spent the next decade building secure cloud platforms for US healthcare and fintech companies, the kind where a payment failing or someone seeing data they shouldn't is the worst day of the year. Trust and payments are what I work on. They are also what KasaStay needed.
The idea is simple. Renters should see real photos of real properties, with real prices and real reviews from people who actually stayed there. They should be able to pay with what they already use: MoMo and Orange Money for those of us at home, regular cards for those of us abroad. Owners should see exactly what's happening with their property in real time. And the whole thing should run on something more reliable than a relative on WhatsApp.
I'm building KasaStay from the diaspora, with a team on the ground in Cameroon. Coming back to scale it from home is on the roadmap, not the unlock. The work doesn't wait. Every week the team adds new listings, fixes bugs, ships improvements. Every booking made on KasaStay is one less of those stories.
If any of this sounds familiar, you understand why I'm doing it.
