Most Cameroonian agencies will not hand a vehicle to someone they do not know. When they do, they want heavy security: often a land title, sometimes a passport, almost always a cash deposit. For a visitor, and especially for diaspora home for a few weeks, that door is closed in practice.
A driver also solves three things nobody warns you about: the traffic, parking, and the fact that much of the local addressing works by landmark rather than street name.
