Kribi is Cameroon's number one beach destination. Fine sand, turquoise water, the Lobé waterfalls that drop straight into the Atlantic, grilled fish and prawns by the shore: if you're looking for a vacation rental in Cameroon, Kribi almost always belongs near the top of your shortlist. Here's what to know before booking your stay.
When to visit Kribi
The dry season (December to February)is the prime window. Beaches are perfect, the ocean is calm, and you get sunshine without the brutal March-April heat. It's also peak season: prices climb, especially around Christmas and New Year. Book 4-6 weeks ahead.
The short dry season (July-August) draws families on school holidays. Lively atmosphere, more crowds, ocean can be rougher.
The rainy season (May-June, September-November)is cheapest. If you're fine with a few showers, beachfront villas drop to 40-50% of December prices. The Lobé falls peak during this period.
Where to stay
Town center (Kribi-ville): handy for restaurants, the market, and nightlife. Good for first-timers or anyone traveling without a car.
Plage Tara, Plage Ngoyé, Mboamanga: best public beaches reachable on foot from many residences. Grilled fish stalls come alive in the evenings.
Campo road (toward the Lobé): more secluded villas, complete quiet, perfect for families or groups wanting their own slice of beach. A car helps.
Lolabé and the deep-water port area: newer development, modern stays for business travelers. Less touristy.
How much does a Kribi rental cost
Indicative high-season (December) pricing :
- Studio in town: 25,000 to 40,000 XAF per night
- Beachfront 2-bedroom: 60,000 to 100,000 XAF per night
- 3-bedroom villa with pool: 150,000 to 250,000 XAF per night
- Private beachfront villa (4-6 bedrooms): 300,000 to 600,000 XAF per night
Off-season runs 30-50% lower. Family villas become genuinely attractive in groups of 8-10: split per head, the cost falls below a midrange hotel.
Things to do in Kribi
- Lobé waterfalls: 8 km from town, one of the few waterfalls in the world that drops directly into the sea. 2-hour visit, canoe trips available.
- Bagyéli pygmy village by canoe: half-day trip, arranged via a local guide.
- Beach-grilled fish: a must. Captain, sea bass, prawns, served with cassava and pepper sauce. Budget 5,000 to 10,000 XAF per person.
- Grand Batanga lighthouse excursion and coastal forest walk.
- Snorkeling and light diving: a handful of local operators at reasonable prices.
Practical tips
- The Douala-Kribi road is paved and the drive takes about 3 hours. Leave early.
- Mosquitoes are active at night, especially in the rainy season. Bring repellent and consider malaria prophylaxis.
- Mobile Money is accepted nearly everywhere, but keep cash for beach vendors and grilled fish stalls.
- Beachfront nights can be loud (bar music). If you want quiet, pick the Campo road.
